• AT&T 3G Upgrades Complete, But Faster Speeds Won’t Come Just Yet

  

  You’ve got to hand it to AT&T: They’ve become the tech version of comedian Rodney Dangerfield and his classic line, “I can’t get no respect!” But with new software upgrades recently completed at their cell sites across the nation, that may change soon enough.

  AT&T announced this week that the stage is now set for faster 3G speeds and enhanced mobile data performance thanks to the new software upgrades — although the fruits of those labors won’t begin to appear until later this year and even into 2011.

  The faster speed will largely come thanks to the deployment of High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 technology across all of AT&T 3G cell sites. For iPhone 3GS owners, this will be welcome news, since the hardware inside their handset is already ready for the improved speed.

  If you live in Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles or Miami, you might already be feeling some of the HSPA 7.2 speed burns, since AT&T started flipping the switch on the service in those cities on a site-by-site basis last month. The rest of America will have to wait until the speed bump is slowly rolled out throughout the rest of this year and into the next.

  “We are focused on providing our customers with the industry’s best combination of mobile broadband speed, performance, coverage and available devices,” said John Stankey, president and CEO, AT&T Operations. “As we light up new backhaul connections across the country, we’re able to deliver a meaningful 3G speed boost for millions of customers who are already using HSPA 7.2-compatible devices. At the same time, we’re also looking to the future with these backhaul enhancements, which will support our move to next-generation LTE technology starting in 2011.”

  LTE (Long Term Evolution, or what is widely referred to as “4G”) technology promises to blow the roof off mobile Internet speeds, and AT&T is in a race with competitors Verizon and Sprint to deploy them sooner than later. However, AT&T feels that 3G will continue to be the “predominant mobile broadband network technology worldwide for smartphones for the next few years.”

• Can’t Check Gmail on iPhone 3GS

  I just got an iPhone 3GS, and I can’t connect to my Gmail in the Mail app. This worked just fine on my old iPhone, but now I’m getting an error message that says, “Cannot connect using SSL.” I can connect just fine to Gmail using Safari, but I’d prefer to use Mail.

  We’ve noticed the same problem at the ScottWorld offices as well. It appears that Gmail has implemented some sort of new security restriction, but there’s an easy fix.

  First, double-check that IMAP access is still enabled for your Gmail account. To do this, log in to Gmail in Safari, click Settings in the upper-right corner of the screen, click the Forwarding And POP/IMAP tab, and ensure that Enable IMAP is selected.

  

  Then, on your iPhone, use Safari to go to Google’s account unlocking webpage at www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha. Type in your email address, your password, and the letters that you see in the image. Then tap Unlock.

  Note that you must go through this unlocking process on your iPhone. After doing so, you may also have to delete and re-create your Gmail account from the Mail, Contacts, Calendars section of your iPhone’s Settings.

• Rumor: AT&T Getting an 8GB iPhone 3GS?

  

  While there have been rumors that an 8GB iPhone 3GS could be headed to Canada’s Rogers network, as reported by BGR, there are now rumors that AT&T is planning to replace the $99 8GB iPhone 3G with the faster iPhone 3GS. 

  According to BGR’s sources, AT&T customers will be able to purchase an iPhone with a faster processor, more RAM, and a better camera for the same price just in time for the holidays. This would unarguably be a great sales boost for Apple.

  Also, the source claims that this could also be AT&T’s way of combating the Droid madness from Verizon.

  We’ll see soon if this is the real deal.

• Apple Fixes iPhone Vulnerability, Disables Jailbreaking

   

  

   

  New iPhone 3GS’ are shipping with updated bootroms that fix a vulnerability used to jailbreak the devices.

  According to iClarified, "iBoot-359.3.2" started shipping last week, disabling the 24kpwn exploit that the iPhone dev team has used to jailbreak the iPhone. 

  What does this mean for new iPhone 3GS owners? Well, you won’t be able to jailbreak your iPhone for the time being. iClarified recommends that if jailbreaking is your thing, to locate older units that don’t have this new bootrom. 

  As far as we know, this inability to jailbreak your device only applies to new iPhones 3GS’ shipping within the past week.

• Bell Canada Prepares for iPhone Rollout with Landing Page

  

  What you see above is the splash page on Bell Canada’s site for their upcoming rollout of the iPhone 3GS, which is another addition to their expanding lineup which includes the Palm Pre and BlackBerry Bold.
