AT&T Has a Trio of iPhone Competitors on the Way

On March 23, 2010, in Industry News, by J.R. Bookwalter

Dell AeroWhile it seems that AT&T’s exclusivity on the iPhone is safe for the near future, that isn’t stopping them from filling their shelves with Apple’s competition.

Electronista is reporting
that AT&T has announced a trio of smartphone additions prior to the annual CTIA event. The biggest news is that Palm’s Pre Plus and Pixi Plus will be making the leap from Verizon Wireless to AT&T, marking the first time the devices are available in GSM versions here in the U.S. Aside from the switch in radio types, both phones are identical to Verizon’s, including double the RAM and 16GB of internal storage for the Pre Plus and Wi-Fi on the 8GB Pixi Plus.

AT&T didn’t provide many other details, but the Pre Plus will be available for $150 on contract, with the entry-level Pixi Plus only $50 on contract. Both are expected “in the coming months.”

The telco giant is also making its second big leap into Google’s Android. Following on the heels of the Motorola Backflip, the Dell Aero is basically an “Americanized version of the Mini 3i” which features a custom interface designed by AT&T and Dell. The device includes a 640×360 touchscreen and 3-megapixel camera, but a release date or even a price remains unknown at this writing.

Landing on AT&T is critical for both Palm and Dell — Palm just announced a disastrous winter quarter, with rumors swirling near and far that the company is on life support. After weak sales on Verizon, Palm could use the extra exposure from AT&T, assuming the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus don’t arrive too close to a new iPhone, presumably coming in June.

Meanwhile, Dell is taking a step into its first U.S. smartphone, which is no small feat in today’s marketplace. How their new Android device will stack up to the competition will be closely watched.
