It’s been a pretty quiet day in the Apple universe so far. Thank goodness AppleInsider has brought us the speculative goods on what you may be gazing and tapping away with the first iPad refresh, due to hit the streets whenever Apple’s good and ready.
According to AppleInsider, the next iteration of the iPad, which is no doubt already a glint in the eyes of many of Apple’s engineers, may include an OLED touchscreen. This news, should of course, be taken with a grain of salt. OLED displays are quite expensive, and should Apple wish to maintain the iPad’s pricepoints, it seems unlikely that they would incorporate the technology unless the per unit cost were to drop before the unveiling of iPad 2.0. However, given that the cheapest iPad will set you back $499, with component costs amounting to only $260, there is a bit of financial wiggle room to fit an OLED screen into the mix provided that Apple is willing to lose out on some of that sweet, sweet tablet profit.
