Analyst: Recent Support And iPad Deal Suggest Apple To Stick With Big Blue

On February 10, 2010, in Industry News, by Matthew Tilmann

ATTDeathStar2 While the speculation has been at a high, in that the iPhone might jump on to Verizon as well as other carriers this summer, recent developments have led another financial firm, Barclays Capital, to believe that Apple will stand behind AT&T through 2010, according to AppleInsider.

Analyst Vijay Jayant said Apple announcing that they would have a no-contract 3G data plan through AT&T for the iPad, shows that Apple seems pleased for now in its relationship with AT&T.

"(The) launch of Apple’s iPad on AT&T’s network is a vote of confidence in AT&T’s network by the equipment maker," Jayant said in his note.  "While iPad sales are unlikely to materially impact wireless revenues in the short term, selecting AT&T to launch its second major communications product reflects Apple’s bias for the global GSM platform and the prospects AT&T’s network capability.  Moreover, it could suggest the iPhone exclusivity may continue, at least through the end of 2010."

Also, Steve Clement of Pacific Crest has beliefs that the odds of exclusivity being extended were improved, especially with the recent announcements.  He said Apple’s tone about AT&T has become more positive lately.

From a financial standpoint, AT&T would certainly be wise to try and keep the iPhone all to itself.  Barclays estimated that the iPhone makes up 47 percent of AT&T’s smartphone roster.  Smartphones usually mean more average revenue for carriers, which the iPhone has certainly brought to AT&T
