AT&T Not Claiming Responsibility For Video Restrictions On 3G iPad

On May 4, 2010, in Industry News, by Matthew Tilmann

ATTiPad2Rumors are running afoot that ABC may actually update their app to allow video streaming over 3G.  But meanwhile, back at the ranch, AT&T is saying they are not responsible for these initial restrictions, which are a result of Apple’s rules for HTTP Live Streaming and ABC’s initial development of the app, says AppleInsider.

As the iPad 3G began its launch this past Friday in the US, many users became increasingly frustrated to find that the ABC Player app, would not work over AT&T’s 3G network.  Of course, users cast initial blame toward AT&T.  And who could blame them, considering AT&T has prevented services like streaming, MMS and tethering?  But the cellular giant says it had no hand in the matter.

Endgadget caught that the initial restrictions were actually self-imposed, with the developers opting out of providing 64 Kbps streaming for optimal 3G playback.  This would be why the ABC app doesn’t allow streaming, while services like Netflix and YouTube do.

“You must include a low quality stream of no more than 64 Kbps for your app to resort to when network conditions demand it, along with the higher quality streams you want to deliver to your customers when the network can support it,” states Apple’s rules in the iPhone OS Reference Library.

As mentioned above, reports are coming out that ABC could be working on a 3G-compatible version of its video app.  An ABC rep mentioned to Silicon Alley Insider that the lack of 3G functionality was “based on a variety of business and technical considerations.”
