Targus Bluetooth Comfort Laser Mouse & Compact Optical Mouse

They’re not Magic or Mighty, but these mice fit the bill.

A good mouse is priceless. It’s a key cog in any computer-based workflow. But the thing is, everyone has a different idea of what “good” is. For mobile users, it might mean small and light, while a desktop Mac user may value comfort above everything else. Apple takes a one-size-fits-all approach to mice, and while the new Magic Mouse can pull off cool tricks, sometimes simple and reliable is all you really need. Besides, options are always a good thing.

Targus’s new mice are clad in glossy black with grey rubber grips along the sides, and they’re Mac-compatible straight from the box. The Bluetooth Comfort Laser Mouse features 1,200 dpi resolution–great for setups that require a bit more precision than standard optical mice–and its three-button design includes a scrollwheel in the middle. Since it’s cross-platform compatible, Windows users can download driver software to customize the center-click, but no Mac equivalent exists… grrr! Also, because the scrollwheel is free spinning, anyone who’s accustomed to a mouse that scrolls in steps will have to adjust to the difference in the action.

Take your pick: Targus’s nifty new mice are cross-platform and come in small or medium.

During testing, we found the Laser Mouse easy to use. It paired with our Mac instantly and worked like a charm. There’s an on/off switch on the bottom, and three white LEDs tell you at a glance how much juice is left in the two AA batteries. Targus claims up to six months of usage on two AA batteries, but for longer battery life, there’s another version of the Laser Mouse that’ll give you 15 months of mousin’ around before you need fresh cells (according to Targus). Called the Wireless Comfort Laser Mouse, it connects via a tiny USB transmitter, so that extra battery life comes at the price of one of your precious USB slots.

The Laser Mouse strikes a balance between comfort and portability, but for users who need something even smaller, Targus offers the Compact Optical Mouse. It features a three-foot retractable cable and weighs a mere 3.8 ounces. It’s too small to comfortably use for more than a few minutes, but if you need to maximize space in your travel bag, this itty-bitty mouse is worth a look.
