During a JP Morgan conference with analysts this morning, AT&T’s Wireless CEO, Ralph de la Vega, was quoted as saying, “I’m addicted to the iPad.”
He went on to say that the iPad has, “changed the way I work” and that he was recently able to get through all of his email on a flight that included in-flight Wi-Fi service.
Business Insider reports on the conference that Vega was attending. According to their report, Vega was talking about how iPhone customers on AT&T won’t make the switch to another carrier when the exclusivity between AT&T and Apple ends.
He gave the following reasons of why users won’t switch:
- 70% of AT&T’s customers are on family plans, which can be a hassle to move everyone over to a new carrier
- 40% of customers are on corporate discount plans
The CEO didn’t give any additional information about the exclusivity deal, like dates. It looks like we will just have to wait and see if his predictions about the deal comes true.

After being announced less than two weeks ago, Sling Media has announced that the updated version of SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone is now live in the App Store, complete with 3G streaming at long last.
MacRumors is reporting that Sling Media has made the announcement that its iPhone-loving users have been waiting for: SlingPlayer Mobile has finally been updated to allow streaming over AT&T’s 3G network in addition to the Wi-Fi capabilities the app was already capable of.
“We’re delighted the SlingPlayer Mobile App now has 3G capability,” said John Gilmore, Sling Media’s senior vice president and general manager. “Slingbox users in many countries around the globe, including the United States, can now enjoy their living room TV experience on their iPhone and iPod touch whether on a 3G or WiFi network.”
The fact that the iPhone app was crippled at all has long been a complaint of Sling fans, especially considering that similar apps on Blackberry and Windows Mobile using the same network had no such limitation.
AT&T announced less than two weeks ago that SlingPlayer Mobile was being blessed with 3G data streaming, with AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega claiming that they had worked closely with Sling Media to “revise the app to make it more bandwidth sensitive.” But Sling denied that they had done anything to the app in that regard between its first appearance nine months ago and its approval today.
The new SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone version 1.2 remains $29.99 and as always, is free for existing users. The app is compatible with both the iPhone and iPod touch and requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later.

The iPhone has likely become a love/hate relationship with its carriers: On one hand, profits are surging like never before. But the huge data demands for the device are taxing the 3G infrastructure and exposing weaknesses in their systems. Who’s going to pay for those upgrades?
