From the home screen or from within an app if you swipe up from the bottom and to the right you can access the app switcher a little faster than you can using a slight pause. Just up from the bottom and to the right (in Jeff terminology) in one fell swoop lol.

Swipe up and at halfway up the screen swipe right. No pause and it always works.
For screen recording, you can get a cleaner out if you lock your iPhone with the side button.
