  3. One NVMe SSD is faster than this 4xRaid0 which is quite underperforming
    IMHO. I would have expected about 1,5-2 Gbytes/s.

    • raid doesn’t scale too well. Also SATA has way slower access times. Doing
      multiple things at the same time on this raid will drastically reduce
      performance. My Windows PC has a raid0 with 2 SSD’s and in benchmarks I
      reach 1Gbyte/s but during real world… zipping a lot of files, loading a
      game (not sequential)… I hover around 20 – 100 mbyte/s with 100% drive
      load.

    • The next generation USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 external SSDs will offer better
      performance, better portability and less risk of data loss (RAID 0). And
      also no fans.

    • 9to5Mac thanks for the answer. I didn’t read the article (this time). I
      think I could appreciate a Raid 10 or 5 on the x4 Box rather than the
      limited Raid0 Performance. That way it is redundant and might not be much
      slower (at least with Raid 10, the software Raid5 might have some writing
      trouble).

  4. Why would you want RAID 0 over 1? RAID 0 is impossible to recover; speed is
    irrelevant if data is lost! Even RAID 5 recovery can be problematic in my
    experience; RAID 1 is almost fault-proof (albeit not as fast as 0 or 5).

  5. I always get scared that those enclosures have hardware raid. I have no
    data on it but basic logic leads me to believe that they’d make the drives
    much more unreliable since for raid0 there is no battery backup so an
    uneven state will make them inaccessible and for raid1 there are no
    checksums to tell which drive has actual corrupt data.

    I’d rather get myself a nice NAS… Not these cheap and slow things with a
    custom os… but a little server that supports freeNAS like the HP ProLiant
    or the FreeNAS Mini. Yes, they are more expensive and require knowledge
    about the subject but at least they have actual data integrity benefits
    compared to anything these drive enclosures can do.

    • I agree. These cheap, simple controllers are not the best. I’d rather have
      a SW RAID in this case. I once lost a complete disk in a similar enclosure
      and the controller wasn’t even set to RAID, just JBOD. It still managed to
      corrupt one disk entirely.
      On my server I use a proper RAID controller I trust.

  6. Does it charge macbooks? I guess with that much money it would be worth to
    get 2TB in Macbook config, won’t it? It would take no space and much
    faster.

  7. Great vid. I have the Quad thunderbolt 2 drive enclosure on my iMac 5k but
    now i’m most likely to get two more Thunderbolt 3 enclosures now i have a
    new 15″ MacBook Pro. For me speed is very important since 4k is almost
    out-of-date already. 8k video is the next big thing and for that speed is a
    necessity ! However the speed for me is too slow, theoretically you should
    be able to get at least speeds of at least 3-4Gbps especially since
    BlackMagic speed test shows the internal speeds of my Laptop of 2000mbps
    Read and 1600mbps Write. I would have to Raid 2 units together to get any
    decent performance matching my new laptop!
