3. This looks interesting. For those trolling around, complaining about how much this is just MS copying Apple, I’d like to point out to the rest of us normal viewers that this has probably been in development just as long as CarPlay has, CarPlay just became public before this.

   • Actually CarPlay was unveiled a year ago. It only just *launched* (as in it’s a real working product in real cars, not a vapour-ware demo).

   • +theeponym They were both probably still in development long before being unveiled. That’s what I was getting at really. Just trying to cut the trolls off at pass before they march in and claim MS is copying Apple “word-for-word” style.

6. In my personal opinion this looks way more interesting that Apple’s CarPlay – though it still seems to have some shortcomings. 

   • If you look at windows compared to osx, there’s no thought in it at all, just complete flat squares with white icons. That’s exactly what any Microsoft style is with newer systems.

   • No thought in it? The newer windows products has been hailed for their design-language – you might not like it, but there definitely is a thought in there.

   • Barely to me, I mean why did they throw it all away on windows 7 for this?

12. Is this a joke? They put together a demo to let us all know that our cars may soon have many of the same functionalities of our phones. You don’t say? Glad you boys have been hard at work rethinking the way we interact with our cars. There wasn’t a single meaningful car-specific task that was showcased. Anyone that has been working on this should be fired. Start from scratch (which is basically where they are at this point).

13. I have Lumia 920 and you know what Microsoft? Your product sucks because it is missing the basics such as:
    – my WP8.0 is not able to stay connected with Windows8.1 or Windows7 PCs!!! It is your ecosystem, and I can’t even copy music or photos to my phone over USB!
    – There is no search for music on the phone! DOES NOT EXIST AT ALL. I wonder if that search button in your demo works on mp3s…

    So go fix the basics before screwing up even more devices with your unfinished software!

Apple, and now Google have both revealed ready or near ready in car infotainment solutions that is and will be available in cars in 2014 — meanwhile Microsoft is demoing a mere concept that will likely NEVER see the light of day. Meh, each day it gets harder and harder to be a Microsoft supporter.

    • +The Cudder Windows Embedded has been used by many automakers in the past. OSs for Cars it’s nothing new.

16. Could this interact with the car’s ECU and help tuners change engine settings on the fly? If so microsoft wiill have a big hit with the tuners.

17. apparently this has all been forgotten about because there hasn’t been a peep about this since build 2014 back in April of last year. At this point I’m ready to switch to another OS that’s not dragging it’s feet in the automotive department!

    • +eastender74 As a Windows Phone developer I’m seriously contemplating writing a dashboard app for cars with miracast recivers (or I may reverse engineer the Windows phone projection app for Windows and port it to infotainment systems) :/ I talked to MirrorLink recently and they haven’t given me anything 🙁

      I tried both of them out and honestly, I think Im sticking with my tablet mount in dash 😀

18. I really like my windows 8 devices so if they can get it working in the car i will probably buy it.

    Typical user interface in a car is just garbage. So this is a big improvement in my opinion.

    Having said that I would rather just have it mirror my phone and be done with it. Idk why it needs to be different.
