The "2020" Mac mini is actually the Mac mini (2018) with more base storage. Other than that, this is the same machine from 2018, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The 2018 Mac mini was the most versatile Mac upon its launched, but that title now belongs to the Mac Pro. But given the Mac Pro's price, the Mac mini may be a good alternative if you're willing to upgrade the RAM, opt for the six-core CPU, and add an external GPU. In fact, with a few upgrades, you can make the Mac mini perform like a baby iMac Pro.

I’m actually finishing up my yearly “IT and the Photography” 3-part series and mention the Mac mini as a real, viable option for creative purposes. My first Mac was a 2011 mini and would still be using it today if I bought the quad-core version instead of the dual. It’s that good. You showed that the mini is nipping at the heels of the iMac Pro. Damn fine machine.
Slap an AMD Ryzen 4900HS in the next iteration for the same price, I’ll get one immediately. Video editing without an eGPU on such a small, portable machine would be awesome. This, however isn’t worth it.
Do you recommend the mac mini for live streaming with OBS or Ecamm Live? I get a lot of fan noise with my MacBook pro 2019 with 32GB RAM.

I’m using OBS for streaming on my i5 Mac mini 32gb ram. While I’m coding using Xcode + visual studio. It’s just getting hot but the fan is at the ideal all the time if I want it to cool down I can just ramp the fan up to 2500 still can’t hear it .
It would be nice from Apple to make a Mac midi.

With the right peripherals, the mac mini is the best mac imo!
You find lots of Mac Minis in SERVER FARMS. They work GREAT performing all sorts of dedicated functions, take very little electricity, and don’t rob your environmental budget.

Do you know how to bit-stream dolby Atmos to reciever with latest mac-mini? I have purchesed one and no atmos sound could pass through HDMI…
The design and form factor are great. But the power is underwhelming. You can’t do much with this.
To upgrade, you must spend much more (even an enormous EGPU). Doing this defeating the purposes of Mac Mini’s cheaper price point and small form factor. There are many better alternatives if you are already prepared to go this route.
How is Mac mini as a htpc? I don’t like Apple TV for its limitations, like no 4K in YouTube.

To be honest, I’m very happy with 2018 model… but not 100% happy. First, I had to change the motherboard once, because of Bluetooth problems… and although things have been A LOT better, from time to time, it still looses connection. But most annoying, I had issues connecting an external GPU (RX 580) and Razer Core X. Although it worked fine when the computer is already turned on, I didn’t make it through a restart. Black/White screen of death is all I got… until disconnect the eGPU and a second restart. But then, I bought an Apple USB-C Cable, and suddenly that problem disappeared. The restart worked perfectly well, even if eGPU was connected. BUT, Apple did some macOS Catalina Update and after that, AGAIN, I can’t restart the Mac mini with the eGPU connected because of the black/white screen of death issue!!! So, Jeff, I get used to work with the mini in some way this year and a half, disconnecting and re-connecting the eGPU on macOS (shamefully, the restart works wonderfully on Windows!!!). But putting this aside… size, energy, CPU power and speed, design from the Mac mini, has been great. With the 6-core i7 CPU, and 16GB RAM, has been a great machine… and I work with 3D, animations and video edition apps in macOS AND Windows (oh yeah, and I play A LOT of video games too).
Could non-Blackmagic eGPU + Mac mini use 6K and Pro XDR in practice? For example, Razer Core X or Sonnet eGPUs
If using external harddrive to store content 128gb is more than enough to install all applications you can handle. 256 just feels safer. Just a feeling
