I can’t imagine apple changing the iPad Pro enough to make someone want the M2 version if they already have an M1 iPad Pro.
Exactly until they make the OS more open and desktop computer like it’s just wasted power. Who will benefit from upgrading the m1 to m2 on the iPad?
I agree, the M2 version Will have to offer other inovations to worth the price and make people purchase these new version.
Yeah I have both the 11 inch and 12.9 inch ipad pros (m1) and I’m going to wait until the m3 or even m4 to be honest.
M1 no haha, but for someone like myself with my 2018 iPad Pro running that old A12X SoC, doubling the CPU & GPU power is extremely tempting despite mine still running smoothly for most intensive apps. We’ll see man; their events always make me lust for the newest devices even if I don’t ultimately update them annually.
@W773 OP05 I’d say wait for the m3. I bet they will do something worth updating by then. I got 2 m1s so I’m obviously waiting.
Love my M1 12.9″ iPad Pro and magic keyboard. Only reason I’d upgrade is if we get the rumored 14.1″ iPad Pro.

The best thing would be when Apple allows users to draw with apple pencil on MacBook and iPad keyboards. At that time it would be a costly upgrade over the base model to choose the track pad which supports pen input but still that would be great to have.

Fernando, no one who already owns the M1 iPad Pro “has to” upgrade to the M2. The M1 chip, miniLED display, thunderbolt port and center stage were game changers for the iPad Pro in 2021. The new features you mentioned for 2022 are just not on that same level, except for people coming from 2020 or earlier iPads.
You mentioned that developers will be creating ways to utilize the new 4-pin connectors. If history is any guide, it could take 3 to 6 months (or longer) for their apps to be ready. So M2 IPP buyers will have a while to wait before they can fully utilize the new hardware. When Apple introduced LiDAR in the 2020 iPad Pro, reviewers were saying it was for developers to create “future uses” for the technology. I think this year may be somewhat similar.
All this to say that I’m happy with my M1 12.9, especially as my hefty investment for the 1TB model, Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil leave me with no desire to run out and spend that money all over again for what looks to be a spec bump and an I/O enhancement.

While I can see multiple reasons to upgrade from an M1 to an M2, I agree that this machine is going to appeal more to people with older iPad Pro’s. Great comment!
We don’t yet have apps that make the M1 breathe hard. I won’t be upgrading.

I normally upgrade my iPad but I think I’ll hold on to my 12” M1, I’m still super happy and I don’t think performance upgrades are really worth it at this point
I have the latest 12.9”. I can’t think of any reason to upgrade. I might be tempted for a larger 14” or 16” per the rumors. The keyboard weight, design and lack of pencil storage is my biggest aggravation. Also, the volume buttons not changing orientation like the mini is annoying. I love the mini Touch ID and would like those features. I’m waiting for the mini to get mini led.
You can change the settings so volume buttons change with orientation
@Carlo on the 12.9 iPad Pro (2021)? Meaning they will alternate as you turn the device?
If they move the front-facing camera to the center of the horizontal mode (where 97% of us USE our iPads), I will consider upgrading.
I don’t think hardly anyone with an M1 will feel the need to upgrade. It’ll be for people who have an older iPad or an iPad Air who want to upgrade.
I have an iPad Pro 1st gen from 2018 that is still running great and still feels much better than the newer iPad Air because of the ProMotion display. I don’t plan on upgrading until the battery has significantly degraded or until there is truly a reason to upgrade that an everyday user would actually notice.
Still happy with my 3rd gen 12.9” Pro and Magic Keyboard. Waiting to see what will be new this fall and may or may not upgrade at that point. I like having the latest and greatest, but not into taking out a second mortgage to do it.
I don’t think the processor upgrade will drive any upgrade cycle from the M1 iPad Pro by itself. If you are right, and the eight pogo pins somehow give us TB4 docking through a new Magic Keyboard, and the magic Keyboard is redesigned along the lines of the Patently Apple disclosure of a keyboard that has wider viewing angles, a “pull forward” mode like the HP Folio for writing and drawing, and a silo for the Apple Pencil 3 in the hinge, then I could see a lot of M1 upgrades for the entire experience, not just ipadOS 16.1 compatibility. I’m still very skeptical of that scenario because so many rumor sites insist magsafe charging is coming to the M2 iPad Pro – and why would you do that and docking? One thing no one seems to be discussing is a landscape oriented front camera, which is critical as the ipad Pro moves to a more capable laptop replacement.
With ProMotion display even the 10.5 iPad Pro is still satisfying for the most in 2022.
I really want a next gen iPad Pro my air 2 is not going to get updates going forward. I wish iPads had a haptic and vibration motor surly it would be great for accessibility
Apple pencil definitely needs a few extra buttons to make it more useful for drawing, like the surface pen
It’s absolutely bonkers to me, my (now old) 2018 A12X IPad Pro which was the first one to have this awesome redesign still seems nearly as fast and efficient as the day I got it. Seeing the new M1 benchmark DOUBLE THE AMOUNT OF GPU & CPU power in just 4 years blows me away and has just got to extend the already crazy lead Apple’s chipsets have over the competition. The only areas I feel like I see a little bit of age with mine are with more GPU-intensive apps like cad-rendering in Shapr3D and another app I use for school, Complete Anatomy which has really detailed models of the human body. That and battery life that seems to only last 6-7 hours at most now but still I’ve been very pleased with how well the old models have lasted and are still being given new iPadOS updates every year. Truly, Apple has knocked it out of the park with iPad Pro’s since 2018 IMO.
I’m switching slowly over to the Apple Ecosystem and am gonna have to go relatively budget friendly for it, so I’m definitely not gonna get it, but I sure want it lol
It would be great if we could get a M2 Pro in the iPad Pro. And have the ability to use destop applications ect.
Also would be great to use the Thunderbolt for multi monitor apps
Hardware wise the ipad pro has everything you need what limits the iPad is the software. It has the power to run desktop apps but its not there. Specwise it has the power to run Maya, 3DS Max, Blender, After effects and many more.
Until Final Cut Go or DaVinci Resolve for the M1/M2 iPads are released, I’ll be sticking to my 12.9 1TB 2018 iPad Pro, thank you very much!
