Dang, i just bought a 16 inch MBP… I was told by several YouTubers that we wouldn’t see an Apple Silicon version for some time. Oh well, I most likely won’t have buyer’s remorse, just because this is still a very powerful computer.
@Cam Young TBH, I needed the Intel processor because I am using boot camp to run Windows apps as well. I don’t really care about better battery life (because it is pretty good for what you get already), and I don’t care about being able to run iOS apps. The idea that developers most likely haven’t optimized their apps for Apple Silicon was concerning for me, especially since I have work that needs to be done now. Even though Rosetta is a thing, it should really be used at the worst case scenario.
That computer will be fine for several years to come. If you are unhappy you can sell it to me cheap. 😉

Here’s the question: if they shrink the form factor of the Mac Pro, does this indicate that Apple has not learned their lesson over what it means to have a ‘pro machine’? 2013 Mac Pro was a form factor change that bombed. Not saying they’d go that small, but it’s a legitimate concern. I’ve seen a couple Mac Pros and some that were filled to the brim. Please don’t ruin a good thing Apple!
Also, ARM replacing Intel for workstation??? AMD, yes, but not ARM. Not in the next decade if you ask me. Virtualization, Drivers, Software, and so much more is no where close to ready for full ARM support.
Intel has been a disappointment in mobile processors for some time now – I would not be shocked if they didn’t go all in. Why wouldn’t they? It’s not like there was something forcing them to do this transition before they are ready. Who would buy an Intel based laptop with the Apple Silicon laptops are going to blow them out of the water in speed, thermals and battery life. Unlike Miles I think Apple is going to stomp the crap out of Intel; they already do with the iPad Pro. It’s not even a jump – it’s literally right there.
What’s going to be real fun is will any of them, even the highest end, need a fan?

Yea, I still think a sub $1000 Apple Silicon MacBook makes the most sense. My mom loves her 12” MacBook. A sub $1000 MacBook would be perfect for people like her.
@bbartky actually it would be the best for students all around the world. Most of them are in so called Online Schools. Light, silent and capable laptop for students and Apple will have millions of customers next decade at least. They will continue buying Apple products

Great Summary and Commentary. One thing though… 😉 I remember the transition from PPC to Intel and I’d give it a year or two until everything stabilises. Also – don’t forget your drivers… I’m currently having a problem with an audio interface driver just between two versions of macOS! Multiply this out to a whole new architecture – well, you get my drift. If you have no peripherals – GTG! Otherwise – check compatibility and wait…
