  1. This is very intresting… But can you do a video for gaming on mac on external graphics like yours? Game like Fortnite, game on Steam and stuff like that?

  2. Can’t believe Final Cut isn’t compatible yet with external GPU’s. And no compatibility with gaming in bootcamp is another major drawback. I guess Apple doesn’t want anything to eat away at their iMac pro sales for now. Maybe we’ll see better compatibility with the next MacOS update this Fall and once the modular Mac Pro gets released in 2019.

I enjoy your videos, but I wish you state somewhere when your videos are sponsored or not. Did you buy the eGPU setup with your own funds or is it on loan. And if the Amazon link is an affiliate link or not. A little more transparency makes what you preach more believable. Otherwise keep it up!

    • Thanks for your comments. Unless a video explicitly says sponsored it is never sponsored. I’m always super-transparent about that sort of thing and will include SPONSORED in big letters in the title of the video. You can see several examples on the channel. As far as loaner units are concerned, yes this is a loaner. I can start including that if you’d like, but that has never (to my knowledge) influenced my thoughts in one way or another. I’d say it’s about 50/50 loaners vs out of pocket. Hope that helps.

  3. Just wondering why it’s only powering a 1920 x 1080 monitor at 30Hz? Surely, that should be a lot higher?

    • Yeah it goes higher. It’s my TV; when it’s powered down it loses the proper setting needed for 60Hz. It definitely works fine with 4K at 60Hz. The 1080p you see is actually 4K, just pixel-doubled for HiDPI Retina.

  4. I’m not a FCPX user but that’s kinda disappointing that it’s not supported yet, by any chance you know how it runs with Davinci Resolve? I’m considering picking up a eGPU for my video work. Great video by the way man, love the content you’ve been bringing out and looking forward to your next upload!

  5. For the price of the mbpr + graphics card ,external display and egpu wouldn’t you be better off with an iMac or iMac pro?

    • If money is your main concern, than probably yes. But you can’t exchange the iMac’s display or graphics card for a newer or different one. And you can’t take your iMac (easily) to a café or your sofa to work from there 🙂 A MBP with eGPU is a pretty powerful workstation in your desk that you can take with you if you want or need to. That’s pretty appealing to me. But it might be very different for you.

  6. Was the FCPX test on an external display or internal? – And hey, iMovie for iOS first tarted supported iPhone X recently, so FCP supporting external GPUs was never guaranteed for the initial support for eGPUs.
By the way, what does Apple supporting eGPU on BootCamp have to do with eGPU on BootCamp? Shouldn’t that be on Microsoft, not Apple? And why wouldn’t you be able to do it, if it’s supported on Windows?

  7. Got the Sonnet eGFX Breakway Box 350W with Nvidia GTX1060 3GB running under bootcamp. I wondered whether its possible to upgrade the internal power supply to match the one in the 650W enclosure, so it will support more powerful GPUs in future. It also seems strange that Apple are endorsing eGPUs in High Sierra, but fail to support them in FCPX – makes me wonder what they are playing at.

    • How’s that setup running? I’m thinking bout getting the Sonnet for my 2017 MBP, I have a GTX 1060 3GB too lol.

    • Christian Cuyugan It runs great!! If you’re gaming at 1080p the GTX 1060 3GB card hits the sweet spot. Under Windows 10 on Bootcamp running Heaven benchmark, I get a score of 2288 and an average of 90.8 FPS on Ultra settings. (With the Mac Mini integrated GPU it scored a pathetic 38, and could only manage 1.5 FPS doing the same test!!)

  8. The reason GPUs are so expensive is because people are stupid enough to keep spending money on it! It’s called supply and demand. The only way you can make a statement by hitting them where it hurts, their wallet! If everybody stop by graphics cards and put 1 million comments on their website that their cards are too expensive I’m sure they’ll lower their price.

  9. QUESTION: If I have an iMac 5k 2017 fully loaded (with internal Radeon 580 graphics) and add an eGPU setup with a second Radeon 580 (one inside the iMac, one in the eGPU), will I get double the performance? Or will the internal shut off and the eGPU take over? I’ve heard that eGPUs don’t add performance to the existing graphics, they just add performance to external monitors. Would that be a true statement? My ultimate goal is to export video twice as fast as I am currently running using programs like Davinci Resolve and Adobe Premiere by having one internal iMac GPU and one external GPU working at the same time outputting to the iMac’s screen.

    • the internal one will shut down, take a vega and maybe you will feel some difference but you cant have both running at the same time

  10. I keep seeing reviews with a MacBook…with game and video previews etc. but How does it work with iMac Pro? and with a GTX 1080 ti would be nice to see, with a GPU 3D rendering demonstration.

  11. [CHRIS] Got my Sonnet eGFX 550 and Vega 56, thinking 10.13.4 & FCPX 10.4.1 would support eGPU. On export at least, it was the exact same time as using the lame internal Intel Iris graphics. But we are already transitioning from FCPX to Davinci Resolve, and not only can you build a powerful Windows box for relatively cheap, now I can use it on my MacBook pro + eGPU. I don’t get Apple sometimes…

    • Does the eGPU help with regular playback and effects in FCPX or not at all? I understand it doesn’t help with export.

    • [CHRIS] I haven’t gotten to really test that, but I there is a video by Michael P. Schmidt, just search FCPX 10.4.1 – Update on eGPU – does it work now? And I think he says that some things are working, but export definitely not.

  12. You can force fcpx to use the eGPU if you disable the internal one – You need to turn off SIP, modify some kexts and use an external display. Did a video about it last year if it helps, but to be honest it’s too much hassle.

How is this better than the Mantiz Venus? Is it because this has a bigger fan than the Venus?
