Apple silicon will bring big productivity enhancements to Mac users, and could spell huge performance improvements for video editors using Final Cut Pro. In this video we conjecture about Final Cut Pro running on Apple silicon inside the new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini with M1 chips.

Sorry had to re-up, YouTube problem.
Pls answer his comment, when the unboxing and testing?
@Daniel Shuster top features vid tomorrow.
Always blame this one YouTube. It’s the easiest way to do so. (:
Thanks for the effort!!
When the unboxing of the new mac’s ?
Im just waiting on a 4 port model but I feel like I’ll be waiting till next summer. Been waiting since before WWDC 2020 🙁
Mac mini for me iPad Pro with magic keyboard is enough for me. I just need a place to download torrents again.
AMD hasn’t obtained the thunderbolt authorization yet. Rumor says TB4 has been authorized to AMD.
Now with Apple silicone, TB3 is added, you can see how powerful Apple is.
I know what you mean. Do you use a lot of TB devices as well?
@Hero Great It’s not TB4 in this case. Apple uses USB4, which AMD will also be using. TB4 is still Intel only for now and doesn’t really offer any significant benefits as it stands right now. USB4=TB3 more or less, but without the Intel tax.
@ricky v not right now because it’ll be my first MacBook but I know I will when I get it
Xcode on Apple Silicon Macs let you debug iOS and iPadOS apps while they are running natively, I’m sold
oh damn, that makes the low cost mac mini and air instant dev super machines, plus the battery life on macbooks? people are underestimating the functionality here
Why would that matter, debugging is debugging
Incredible to have the one company designing and developing the OS, apps, APIs, machines and now the last missing piece … the CPU. Sure, higher-end Macs that will have Apple Silicon in the future will still have discrete graphics from the likes of AMD or Nvidia. But the M1 CPU is a complete SOC and it will be able to handle most tasks by itself. Also, the CPU is fundamental to run any application, unlike a discrete GPU that only boosts graphical performance. So with this move Apple really is for the first time in full control of their hardware and software.
I see what Microsoft doing here…
Hint: Ads
All those Surface Go laptop ads!
Lol true
I am super excited for Apple silicon or system on a chip M1 (SOC) on the Mac !
This is a big deal, but I still cannot deal with others who are cancelling the leap Apple made with the M1 Chip.
Massive deal with FCP users! Undeniable…
This was such a cool look and you trying to give some really neat examples. Really cool! Thanks for your thoughts.
Ordered the base model M1 MacBook Air and I’m interested to see the real world graphics performance when it comes to games. (Yes I know the base model only has a 7 core GPU)
I am NOT a fan of Apple’s anti-repair tactics, locked down hardware, and the way they treat developers and contractors.
However, what they’ve accomplished with the M1 might be one of the most important innovations in computer hardware in quite a while. This is going to set a new standard and open up new possibilities for the future.
So far we do not know what they have accomplished, as there are virtually no independent test of that machine. But I agree there may be very high potential in that.
Can’t wait to see FCPX on the iPad!!!!
According to Linus Tech Tips, this is “irrelevant” to the performance of a computer. Being able to edit 8K 10-bit footage on an ultrabook is “irrelevant”….Mac haters are running out of things to get upset about
LTT has a hobbyist demographic to cater to, he has to say things they like to hear with his opinions, while also giving factual info. because benchmarks on scarce still, he’s only going off of their combined whine/moan about apple doing their own thing. Remember – LTT is so anti-mac that he nor most of his crew even know some of the most basic functionality of a mac workflow (e.g. spacebar preview of 3D and vector files) they only see specs and lack of legacy ports.
Best not to get your mac commentary from an anti-mac channel with an anti-mac demographic. :
He makes an interesting point and I wonder how much of it is hate or marketing BS. They gotta say something to get those views coming. 🙁
Well to me it is irrelevant. I am a pro user who uses these macs for numeric simulations (basically 16GB and no gigabit it a no go for me, but they will add it in a next step :). I am unable to use this 16bit neural engine etc as: 1) none of my libraries support it 2) even if they did I need my code to be runnable both on laptop and various computer clusters none of them run M1 or will run M1 in a foreseeable future.
But this change is relevant for “many” people, for most it does not matter as they mainly check their email.
I do want to add that he has a point, this is coming from an engineer (software and hardware). If you make a mobile video editor, you’ll make sure that it performs smoothly. This might mean that the preview mode might be a bit inaccurate in order to keep up the performance. This is a fine decision to make as accuracy is not important for mobile devices. Whereas on a desktops you have professionals working on actual movies etc. The audio and video should be as accurate as possible whilst still trying to give acceptable performance. On desktops you have the ability to adjust the rendering quality of the preview, so you can always go for the performance option. You have to sacrifice options on mobile for a better user experience for the average user whereas we expect “professionals” to be able to fine tune their experience based their needs and hardware capabilities on desktops/laptops.
Think of it this way. This is the difference between mobile games and PC/Mac games.
Edit: I am not saying that the chips aren’t fast or anything, I’m just making a point that you can’t compare a mobile App to a desktop App as if it’s 1 to 1. They process things differently due to the expected end user (not just the codebase etc, just the general philosophy when making such Apps). Even if it is indeed faster, the point still remains.
@Anesu C Nobody did!
Waiting for test comparisons before selling my 2019 MacBook Pro 16
Now there is no reason fcpx shouldn’t come on the iPad pro
@SammyAce ya only for pros as they have more ram and cores
@SammyAce well no one is expecting final cut to run smoothly on a cheap iPad. The one being mentioned is the one that comparable macs especially when you consider peripherals that make work possible. People who need to do serious work will still need a laptop so having final cut on iPads is not gonna eat into Mac sales at all.
Apple takes its time. They could switch to apple silicon earlier but they minimise risks. Created Rosetta 2, Metal 2 optimised, catalyst out, leave the hardware for now and tweak MacOS so they plan things into the future as well
@Res Les apple will probably release redesigned macs with touchscreens and Apple Pencil support in the near future or at least I hope so.
@Mutahir Husain I don’t think so – could take a year or two
I’m hoping in the near future, a ‘MacPad’ will come about, or that the iPad pro becomes MacOS based.
Was this reuploaded because first video’s title hinted that the Mac is already here and was downvoted to hell? Lmao
I thought you’d say final cut pro will be running on the new upcoming iPad Pro 2021.. will it ??
How the hell can a 28 core Mac Pro, with 512 GB of memory, be so embarrassingly slow? Those things require a mortgage to buy. Unbelievable.
I’m curious to see how the recently-updated FCPX compares to the previous release on Intel-based Macs. I wonder, since the software is optimized for the M1 chip, how does it impact non-M1 Macs in terms of performance. I purchased a 16″ MacBook Pro just about a year ago, so I’m nervous about updating now. I can’t see how the software can be great for both Intel-based Macs and M1-based ones. Jeff, care to give it a shot?
