What’s the maximum amount of 4K feeds you can capture on an iMac Pro? Can I do this on my late 2017 MBP? (4 thunderbolt 3 ports)
I’m not sure, I’m thinking two is the max, because of CPU overhead when capturing to ProRes. 2 gets me around 80% CPU usage. Three might be too much tbh. With this in mind, the CPU on your MacBook Pro would be the likely bottleneck. I doubt it could handle two streams, but I’d have to test it to find out.

Question: some help. I got a Mac mini 2014 with thunderbolt 2. I want to use the thunderbolt 2 connectors for faster speed ( to connect Samsung T5 sssd and Sd cards among other ) . I can’t find anything since now everything is USB c and thunderbolt 3 . I have a iMac Pro but I want to use that one for some photoshop and easy editing etc. Can you tell me what can i get to get the most of those thunderbolt 2 ???

Since you already own a atomos recorder … whats the point of spending this money for the enclosure and the capture cards? If you hook up the SSDs from the atomos into your imacpro you have basically the same. You can edit from the SSDs which should be plenty fast even the 4K footage. Love to learn why you did this? Pluggin in SSDs is not such a hard task 🙂
The Atomos recorders are great, but they a). Run out of space eventually, and you have to swap out drives. b). Are extremely small. c). Mounting and dismounting media takes up a surprisingly large amount of time when you add it all up. Might seem silly but when you do this over and over it gets annoying. Plus you have the benefits of a large 27-inch display for framing, notes, etc. there are other benefits as well, but you’re right, I’m not doing anything that can’t be done on an atomos for the most part.
What’s the workflow benefit to this over capturing in camera?
ProRes capture, files directly on computer (no transfers), “unlimited storage”, direct monitoring on a large, high fidelity wide color display (if connected to 5K iMac/Pro).
How do you feel about the single PCI slot Sonnet chassis with the “coming soon” quad capture card? Amazing or limited?
