iPadOS 16 Multitasking: A Complete Guide | Splitview, Stage Manager, Extended Monitor Support (2023)

iPadOS 16 brought us some great updates, especially when it comes to multitasking. But with this update, Apple segregated feature sets on a per-device basis for the first time. So I wanted to explain every form of multitasking, which iPad can use which feature, and give you a complete guide

20 Comments on iPadOS 16 Multitasking: A Complete Guide | Splitview, Stage Manager, Extended Monitor Support (2023)

  1. I love to use Stage Manager on my older iPad Pro (non-M1). It does make you get a better overview of what you are running, Once you get used to how it works then there is no problem really. The only downside of having it enabled is that it drains the battery faster.

But I can see how this feature could become even better with wider app support. It is pretty much what Microsoft wanted to do with “Continuum” on Windows Phone/Mobile, but more complete.

  2. Always appreciate a Fernando video! A couple follow up quEstions: Are there issues with the connection not working to external display if your battery is below 50%? What Other hidden limitations that apple refuses to give helpful prompts for? How about monitors that don’t support power delivery? In which case there’s be no way to power your iPad if it’s only port is used for video. Why can’t we get a real mouse pointer instead of a fuzzy grey dot? Makes it feel fake. And finally how do you prevent yourself from instinctively touching your monitor as if it’s a touch screen since the apps are touch-based apps.

  3. Would love to see extended monitor support on the iPhone. Seems like that would be a real nice competitor to Dex on Android.

  4. Good overview, thank you. One additional remark: if you have an app which doesn’t support Split View then stage manager solves this problem so that you can use this app side by side with other apps. That’s the main reason for me to use stage manager

  5. I’ve tried stage manager. While it might have been somewhat useful if the human interface were better aligned with desktop OS systems, i have found that the current stage manager user interface to be too different and too unintuitive to be worth the effort to figure it out. I have turned it off.

  6. I tried Stage Manager once on my 12.9 M1 and was immediately intimidated, never messed with it again. This video shows that this feature can actually be useful for me. I may try it again in the near future

  7. Just missed a couple small things. In the regular slide over/split screen mode, you can stack apps on the slide over section. You can swipe through the stack from the bottom of it. You can also swipe through the non slide-over apps by either swiping the bottom line left or right, or with a 4 finger swipe left or right.

    • You mean 4 Fingers or? At first i wasnt a big fan of slideover in addition to the other Multitasking Methods. BUT it is Pretty usefull for Multitasking with all the Apps that dont allow Split Screen mode.

    • @Simon Gerbracht ah yes you’re right, it’s so second nature now I don’t even count lol.

  8. I didn’t even know that you could swap the split view apps so easily by tapping the option or using gestures.

  9. does it hurt the battery health if the ipad is always connected to the monitor like nightly basis?

  10. I really like the first iteration of IPad multitasking which is the Split View and slide over. Unfortunately this now doesn’t work in full screen mode when connecting to an external monitor as it will automatically default to stage manager. You just end up with mirroring and those black bars. Would be nice if everything just went full screen when connected to a monitor so you have the option of using stage manager or Split View and slide over.

  11. I really wish they added a clam shell mode. I often watch a long podcast or a 1hr episode of a show on Netflix using my iPad connected to a 1440p monitor and don’t need my iPad’s screen on in that moment.

  12. Thanks a lot I really enjoyed the content of this video.
Does somebody know if Remote Desktop (RDP) works as full screen ? I mean if you connect to your Windows OS as you showed in another video, is it full screen on the external monitor or not?
Reason is I would like to buy an iPad M1 and be able to remote desktop to a windows computer to do some works. Thanks 🙂

  13. It has taken me a little while to get my head around Stage Manager but I really like it. It feels like its a big step in the right direction – it just needs a little polish. Also, as someone else mentioned, it would be great if the iPhone could do the same thing, Dex like, in future.
