I have the 12 pro max, and the question I’m asking myself: The 14 Pro Max is very interesting; but is it worth the hassle of a new carrier contract? My answer is: Nah. Maybe next year.
That’s why you purchase your phones directly from apple, no contracts
@Teresa T Excellent point. I am $200 away from owning my 12 Pro Max and looking forward living to a carrier-contract free life for a while.
@Chronic Town I’ve been doing that for years now, they are also unlocked and will operate on any carrier
MKBHD along others were praising the battery life – I’m upgrading to this as it’s free, if it wasn’t I’d stick with my older phone. Thanks for the detailed review.
Which iPhone are you coming from? What iPhone do you have now?
I came from the 13 pro max to this phone and this is the first time I’ve felt like I could’ve skipped this one. I like dynamic island and the new camera/camera features are great but always on display is annoying and the battery life is bordering great instead of passing great on the 13 pro max. I like the phone…just feel like I didn’t get enough changes that warranted trading in my 13 pro max.
And because of that, I’ll hold on to my 13 pro max for a little while longer now.
I mean come on, no one should be getting a phone upgrade every year, nothing is going to drastically change during that time period. Realistically it’s only worth it to upgrade every few years
When the iPhone crash doesn’t crash
It’s great to have a brighter screen when outside but the downside is that it eats battery.
Good to see you back Miles. I came from the 11 pro max so I’m very pleased. I’m glad I avoided the 12 and 13. I like always on display because I don’t miss an important notification. My battery life in fine. Yes, dynamic island is good and since I’m a great photographer I love the 48MP sensor.
Same, only I’m glad I skipped the 11 and 13. Love my 12 pro max, and holding off until next year means I will especially enjoy the upgrades.
1) The always on display helps, but the message notifications are still a mess and disaster. Some messages show up inside the Notification Center, some do not. Some you can clear all at once, some you have to clear one by one. Sometimes there’s multiple messages in a stack but you can’t undo the stack to see the other messages and are forced to just give up and clear the entire stack. Sometimes you drag down from the top and there’s no messages, but if you swipe up then you can see your messages, but there’s no notification that there are message there. Apple really needs to scrap the whole message system and start fresh.
2)Still no USB C and charging is so slow compared to my other phones.
3) The App tray cannot be customized, it’s worthless since you have no idea where the apps are so you are still forced to make folders to organize your apps the way you can actually use on a day to day basis.
4)Folders Icons are too small and need some way to customize, size, colors etc, this would help with organizing screens and apps.
5) The search function needs a way to be completely shut off, swiping down from the home screen brings up search by accident more than you want. Swiping down from the far right panel brings up search, why is it different, worthless and annoying. The far right panel needs a way to be shut off, I don’t use it, don’t want it.
6) The lock screen and home screen have to have the same backgrounds, even though it says you can customize separately it only allows for different colors but you cannot use different supplied lock screen backgrounds and the home screen.
7) The dynamic island is not very useful. It actually shows microscopic album cover art when you are listening to music, there is probably no human that can even read it or make it out.
8) When you share something from an App like Instagram or Photos and you want to send in imessage, you have to type and search the person, it should show the last few people you message or at least the favorites.
9) The favorite contacts is a kludgy mess. Why is the favorites in the phone app? It makes no sense, the favorites should be in the Contacts App, you should have favorite contacts, then when you select the person you can choose to call, message, facetime etc. Having one favorite contact entry for each function is not good. Having the same contact listed three times, once for call, message and facetime is confusing and just not thought out very well.
Great review! I agree with the colors. Hopefully next year will be better. Thank you for all the great side-by-side comparisons of the camera modes!
Thought about upgrading my 11 to this but a tech head buddy of mine (who supposedly knows someone who works for apple) has STRONGLY urged me to wait for what may be called the iPhone 15 pro ultra. And as the old saying goes “good things come to those who wait”
There will always be something better. When 15 comes out, someone will be saying wait for the next one.
you can aways trade in
@J Woo that would just be a down right waste of money
@gabead1974 yeah well that’s it hey
I still have a excellent battery life compared to my 13 pro max even with the always on display turned on. I don’t see the point on turning it off as it’s a great feature to have on an iPhone.
iPhone 14 pro max is my first iPhone ever. Charged it to 97% last night, woke up it was still at 97%. Just got the phone 20% battery notice at 10pm the next day after 8hr 35min of screen on time. Always on display on. Gotta say that’s mad impressive. Battery practically doesn’t move but it takes forever to charge compared to my Note 20 Ultra
Apple seems very good with battery stand by time , my 12 pro max also often is on the same battery figure in the morning as it was before bed , the only android phone I ever had that was not quite as good but close to this was my Huawei P30 pro .
A bit disappointed however that apple reduced the battery size, this imo was definitely a backward step.
@mikldude …30mAh is barely anything! And, of course, the true battery capacity is usually 4-8% higher than what Apple quotes, so in reality, it is probably exactly the same. From what I have seen, battery life on the 14 PM is significantly better than the 13 PM if you just use the efficiency cores, so web and media streaming. Soon as you start using the performance cores, clocked higher than the 13PM then the battery gets worse. Also, the camera, more stuff going on, so more camera use = more battery drain. With AOD and 2000 nits, then realistically, some users are going to see worse battery life.
Maybe, with the removal of the SIM card we will see a bigger battery next year. Looking at the teardowns, maybe 10-15% easily, possibly more. Whereas Android phones simply do not have room for more than 5000mAh unless they are bulky. Though new higher-density batteries may be ready next year.
You can turn off display by setting
My oppo charges in 30 mins for a 4500mah battery.
@Neeraj Shridhar (Bombay Vikings) that’s amazing and I’m jealous iPhone takes FOREVER
Hey Myles I currently own the iPhone 12 Pro Max since 2020 I’m definitely upgrading to the new iPhone 14 Pro Max. The battery life on the iPhone 12 Pro Max is okay but sometimes it’s pretty disappointing. I’m looking forward to owning the new iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Same here with iPhone 12 Pro max
Ordered a 14pm, upgrading from my 13pm. I went 2 years between my older phones, but this one is too tempting.
Hi thanks for your watching our video message us for your prize
Illl definitely agree apple did great with 14 pro max thats why im getting a space black 256 gb and yes apple needs to have type c on the Iphone 15 line up
The timer on the dynamic island is nice for breaks at work. Helps keep you accountable for returning from your 15 minute breaks in time.
Every year, I popped for a new iPhone. I skipped the 13, & stuck with my 12 ProMax, & had kind of regretted it. However, getting the 14 PM demonstrated to me that there is really not much phone manufacturers can do year to year to wow people. Back when they added new tasks that a phone could do was an exciting era. Now, dozens upon dozens of tech reviewers reach for straws in order to review the iPhone every year, other than to say they are bored with the phone. That is the future of phones, & I suspect this will decrease the number of reviewers.
FYI, I currently have an iPhone XS Max w/256GB. I got it the second day it became available. I am running iOS 16.0.2. However, Siri does not work anymore, even after I have done a full shutdown and power on. It is quite slow and I need to charge it a couple of times a day. So for me, upgrading to the iPhone 14 Pro Max w/512GB is a no-brainer for me. Especially, since I love photography!!!
THANK YOU!
Yes for this particular video but also just a huge thank you in general!
I usually dread instructional videos. For a lot of things but mostly for iPhones. For whatever reason I’m REALLY picky – or maybe sensitive is a better word – about:
1)Voice pitch and tone. How well a persons voice cuts through everything and ALWAYS comes off as being right up front as opposed to swimming around somewhere in the background.
One of the things that every sound person in the world commented or comments about either first or second when they’re first introduced to Johnny Cash and his voice is how incredibly “recordable” it was/is. The way it cuts through every and any other sound or instrument. Not that you sound like Johnny Cash but you never need to “speak louder” to be heard.
2) Annunciation and Accents. Nothing against other accents but more often than not while there English might be wonderful the tendency is to still speak with the rhythm of their natural language. Again just for me personally
listening to this video there was never anything I had to process – adjust for – etc. See? I’m a bit of a freak. Partly because I don’t tend to process “directions” or “instructions” very well so the fewer things in the way of the words the better – for ME.
YIKES!
So there will probably be about 2 people who read this who care at all or particularly get or notice anything I’m going on about. But I guess the bottom line is that:
Listening to your voice is RELAXING. The result simply being that there is nothing in the way of the INFORMATION you’re providing.
Oh – and then I’ll let everyone get back to their lives –
YOU DO NOT WASTE WORDS! You don’t fly off onto random tangents. I never once thought to myself:
“Okay Okay We get it! Move on”
I never got the impression that what you were REALLY doing was audition to be on The Late Show.
Ok done. You rock. Thrilled that I tripped over you! FINALLY I don’t have to debate whether or not to Subscribe I just did it.
CARRY ON SIR!!
