    • hi how about when you edit ? let’s say you have around 50 4k clips form a7iii or any other cameras

    • Hey Miles this is something I’ve seen as well. As your exports grow larger and larger FCPX will use more and more RAM though.

    • ricky v mostly weddings. 3 cameras around 300clip a day footage. i got 32gb mbp with egpu vega 64. when i edit final cut eat lot of ram. wondering how much he gonna use.

    • Found myself in the same situation. Was going to spend the extra $200 for the i7 but after watching this review I decided against it. I’m not doing any video editing.

  2. So to conclude the i7 isn’t really worth it at all :O! I was also considering between both i5/i7 because i7 was said to be better for rendering. Unless you’re a pro who renders over 6k footage, even then the i7 only seem to perform <10% faster, which on top of that had extra 16Gb of rams :O! But for the specs & the cost, I'd build a PC any day over the mac mini, with a full size GPU, because you have to factor in the fact that you had an e-GPU not included in the cost.

  3. Just bought a used Mac Mini with the i5 a couple days ago to replace my completely maxed out 2010 Mac Pro. Wanted an i7 mini but the guy selling it had a price too good to pass up and it came with external eGPU with an RX 580 in it. Was a bit nervous I was going to watch this video and regret not holding out to buy an i7 haha. Looks like I made the right choice and saved some serious $$$.

    While I loved my old Mac Pro and could still edit 4K on it and did all the upgrades for airdrop, 128gb ram, SSD, RX 580, the dual 6 core Xeons became quite the bottleneck on a lot of things. My new Mac mini flies through exports in comparison. However when I’m exporting on the mini I noticed some sluggishness trying to browse the web at the same time. Something my old Mac Pro didn’t do. I’m guessing export on my old Mac didn’t use all the CPUs which left them free to be used for other tasks and my Mac mini has less cores that ALL get used when exporting.

    • ricky v yeah each core on the mini is noticeably more powerful/efficient. I’ve found most programs on Mac OS aren’t optimized to use more than 6-8 cores. So that 12 core on the old Mac Pro essentially just leaves unused cores open for multitasking which is handy, but I prefer fewer WAY faster CPU’s. Biggest downsides now are lack of expandable internal storage and not enough ports to connect accessories. My Mac Mini looks like a spaghetti monster is escaping out the back hahaha.

  4. Miles, could you do a video about thermal throttling on Mac Mini? Every review says about this but none of them has your time of usage of this machine. I think you are the right man for the job. I’m really thinking about buying one but I’m worried about the temperature. Would be amazing to have a definitive answer about this. Thanks!

  6. How did you get 36 GB of RAM with only 2 DIMM Slots? a 32 and a 4GB? Wouldn’t yu get better results with match RAM DIMMS?

  10. Handbrake halves the time spent on converting a piece when RAM is doubled in my experience.

    • DarkCloud360 a Mac is what people could actually use. Something with a present gen (10th) desktop i7 and i5 and a 5600XT at least. Apple most likely won’t do it because it would eat into their laptop profits unless they charged twice what it should be.
