Hi Fernando, great video with lots of details. I wrote earlier indicating that AirPlay is disabled if you attach an external monitor. I would have thought you would have mentioned that when talking about audio sources. AirPlay actually did work for me with an external display in iPadOS 16.0 or 16.1, but not any more. Also, I have a 32” 4K monitor, and the external display actually shows 5 groups of apps rather than just 4 in the app tray on the left side. Have you or other viewers also found this? This carried over into the RC version that I’m currently using, so I don’t think it’s just a fluke any more. Keep up the great videos. Always informative.
There is one big thing still unaddressed by apple, being able to play two audio sources at a time and of course a sound mixer that lets you control volume of each app.
@CallMeRabbitzUSVI Yeah let us know when Android has the Affinity suite or Da Vinci Resolve or literally any powerful mainstream applications to do significant work.
@TidBitsthis right here. I always wonder why it doesn’t work as a feature, yet I can have independent discord audio from other audio apps (Spotify, Netflix, YouTube, twitch. Etc)
Damn, I really love the design of macbook, the power efficiency, and basically all the hardware things, except the software. There are a lot of things that comes in default in windows, but you have to have 3rd party in macos to do the same thing. I really want to use macbook, but these things holds me back so hard.
@Joseph Butarbutar Have both? Nothing stops us from using Linux and Windows and MacOS. You can always get a cheaper one and take advantage of all the hardware but still have your pc for your software.
@Joseph Butarbutar Plus you can still get a basic iPad for 329, and the iPhone se is only 429. A MacBook Air m1 can be had for around 899, and a Mac mini m1 for as little as 599. You can have any combination or just a few, and the more you have the better the features you get with the ecosystem. And you can still keep your PC.
I got a iPad Air 5 just for this reason and so far it’s been an amazing experience. I can deal with the iOS limitations because most of my workflow can be done on a iPad, and with the air getting the M1 and I heard it was having external monitor support, I had to get it.
Or get a pro if you want, either way in a lot of ways the M series iPads are looking much more like a laptop-tablet replacement.

Did you get external monitor working on your Air 5 gen? I have one and can only get mirrored screen on external monitor with Magic Keyboard. Thanks
@Richard KIng go into settings > display, click on your monitors name, and at the bottom of the pop up it should be switch from mirroring to extended
@Fresco_Dinero thanks man. I did tried that. The Ipad can see my Samsung 4k monitor but there was no option to choose between mirror and extended. Maybe it is something wrong with my air 5. Can you confirm that you can choose with your Air 5?

Oh whoa, I didn’t realize you were filming this with your phone. That’s quite impressive actually. Having great lighting makes some awesome results when using the iPhone.
No audio from the iPad speakers is wild. They’re really loud too as you said. Hopefully that’s one of their first updates after its finally released. Thanks for the video
Apple really needs to allow two audio/video sources to play at the same time, especially in the M-series models
I find myself leaving my iPad in stage manager mode more often than not now so I don’t lose the ‘spaces’ I’ve set up with extended monitor support. One thing that still irks me a bit is that video playback from most apps will default to full screen on the extended display despite the app being open on the iPad.
Thanks for the great walk through. The details you covered were the things I was wondering about. I’m excited about the release! Too bad about the two audio sources, but as you mentioned, maybe Apple will address this down the road.
To me, the iPad has BEEN a computer! I use it for work daily. Looking forward to full dual monitor support as it will allow me to use the iPad Pro even more for all my computing needs.
I love that external display support is here now. Hope they will really focus on it.
I want to be able to set the audio source to iPad when connected to a monitor with speakers (since monitor speakers suck)
Also some apps are a bit “chunky” or playmobil feeling on my 3440×1440 ultra wide external display, if we could get a bit more density “more space” setting for externals it would help
Lastly I really want full external display support in the Microsoft Remote Desktop app, but this is on Microsoft to sort, their app won’t go full screen on an external unless it happens to match a supported resolution from a small list (which are all iPad resolutions today obviously)
I’ve tested an audio interface with a hub connected to my iPad and external display, and you can definitely route the audio to either interface or hdmi. You can route audio using Control Center.
which hub did you test? I can only route my audio to my USB-C display or a BT device in Control Center. it would be nice if I had an option for “This iPad” as I agree my iPadPro speakers sound so much better than my monitor speakers!
@Chinarut Rthere is an option which says exactly that. It can be accessed via the now playing widget in the control panel. On that widget there is an icon(don’t know what it’s called) in the top right corner through which you can select the option of “iPad “
Edit: oh well…the option was available and I used it until the recent update…I was on the beta branch…but it seems in the current update the option has disappeared…

@Mohak Sumaria I never noticed it, but it needs to come back. I hate disconnecting my iPad from my monitor to use Zoom.
Good video! I’m also curious if this also adds support for external camera that is connected or embedded to external monitor. Or maybe continuity camera with iphone… So we can have meetings with eye level camera
I ended up using stage manager on iPad and mac. I like it putting away windows when I open something new, and bringing it back when I put that away. And I can pull in a second app on the rare occasion I want 2 at once. Multi window is more the exception that I would have guessed in the past.

It sounds great. However, I moved from a larger ipad to an ipad mini and absolutely love it.
I’m going to go for a Macbook Air to use as more of a laptop as it does what I need, I love the form factor and the length of updates and sturdiness make it a long term device (like my other Apple devices). Though still happily using an LG v60 (quad dac and 3.5mm headphone socket and sd card slot!) and Windows surfacebook (nice but doesn’t integrate so well with things I want, some of it more of an issue with Windows).
Great video, I can definitely see where this iOS stuff is going. Samsung has a pretty similar system called DEX with their flagship phones which you an run from your phone (wireless or wired) to a 4k monitor. Then your phone acts like a Chromebook, kind of. Would be great too see one of those comparison videos
ohhhh please… samsung dex is much much better than this stage manager gimmick apple made.
I’m totally digging this. And I think this is the best video I’ve seen reviewing it’s external monitor support potential. iPad is finally becoming the professional tool that was promised 6 years ago with the iPad Pro. Speaking of which… During the video I was thinking “I’m a creative and I can’t…. Wait….”. Capture One, while not a full version, runs many of the same features as the desktop. DaVinci Resolve…. The only thing that still doesn’t work for photographers: Photoshop.
But for work where I don’t need Photoshop, this could be really awesome. I could be in a hotel room, connect the iPad to the TV and have a totally great setup for work on the road.

We wanted this so much, and I can only see improvements from here. I see some apps greyed out meaning they are not really compatible with external display.
I really consider making the switch from PC to iPAD pro(cheapest with LiDAR)
probably there is a powered dock so you can hook the monitor and USB keyboard/mouse (wireless must recharge)
plusses are: portability, better power (RISC vs x86), LiDAR, probably can develop iOS/iPAD apps
wonder if remote will work fine in safari (guacamole)
Very helpful video! I’d like to use the iPad with the extended monitor to be on a Zoom meeting while editing Google docs. Is that possible or cumbersome? (I’m deciding if I should purchase and iPad or a MacBook. I prefer the size & use of an iPad but need the functionality listed above.)
