  1. I’ve seen this ‘hack’ before, but I’m concerned about the amount of heat that’s going to be dissipated to the display when stuck on like that. Those SSDs can run real hot.

    • @9to5Mac That’s good to hear. But does the SSD not run hot? I don’t mind the looks, just worried about the potential heat damage.

    • @AE The ssd isn’t in direct contact with the backside of the display. I’d argue that a case probably keeps more heat trapped there than this little ssd would.

    • @AE Max temp for ssd is like 60-70C on the mem modules. That’s like 40-50C (40C realistically) case temp tops. That poses no danger at all. I bet in some countries MacBooks sometimes work with higher ambient temp with no major issues.

    • The point is to increase portability for those that need access to ssds perpetually, such as when editing video. I’d argue that it iOS portability in that case. Still don’t agree?

    • @9to5Mac Sorry, but no. Gluing anything to the relatively fragile macbook lid is, with apologies, nonsense and a certain early trip to the service center.

    • I can understand that it’s ugly, but sometimes, thats not the most important part. in stressful situations that could be really handy

    • @Radek Bálint so with the new generation the lid is a lot less fragile in my opinion, but for me it would still be difficult, because it’s not as easy to put in a MacBook sleeve, like I do usually

  2. Hey 9to5Mac, I regularly watch your content, and like usual, that is a really handy tip in a stressful work environment, where you have to move a lot. like videography or other creative content making. but for the casual Mac user, that sits at a desk I think it isn’t necessary. maybe should’ve said that in the video, but shoutout to the production quality, sheeeesh

    • I don’t think that needs to be clarified because if someone doesn’t want to use it/doesn’t need it, they don’t have to, but it doesn’t need to be clarified that’s it not for a specific user because people who do have their computer always at their desk can use it too. I’ve used this for a couple of years and I like it just for the clean up it provides. I don’t have to worry about loose wires. Even for my imac I have velcro on it because it keeps things off of my desk

  3. Been doing this for years. I don’t recommend as big a hook and loop fastener as in this video as when you have to remove the HD it will be stressful to both the drive and screen when you pull.

  4. I velcro tape my ex SSD to the underside of a laptop tray, if i move the mbp around i just pick the whole tray up.

  5. I’ve done this with WiFi antenna and adapters on an old school MacBook Pro but with the displays as thin as they are now I’d be careful adding stuff to the lid It’ll probably be fine but be careful about adding unintentional mechanical stress points.

  6. I do this, be careful I ruined a harddrive by adding the velcro while the drive was connected. I heard a screech and the drive died! use caution!
