Does it corrupt iWork documents?
Huh? That’s a thing? Never experienced it before, but then again I store my iWork stuff in iCloud.
9to5Mac Synology NASs see iWork documents as folders. When you make change to an iWork document, Synology will sync a small part inside that “folder”, instead of syncing the whole thing. It might corrupt the document during such process.
It was a major oversight found years ago. I don’t know if it is fixed by now.

I use the same setup, but I am questioning if TM should be recommended at all, my Mac mini died and I needed to restore one document to my MB Pro and it looks like that isn’t possible anymore due to that TM can’t be accessed from another computer. Apparently you can only use TM during install of a new Mac.
You should be able to access TM Images post-install with no problem.
Jeff, could you do a video on how to set up a cheaper wireless alternative to TimeMachine, now that Apple has abandoned the market? I realise for pros with lots of $$$, the NAS is a good option, but what is the best solution for average users?

9to5Mac Awesome Jeff – I haven’t seen a really good guide on this yet.
you can basically do the same thing with any cheaper Synology NAS. The cheaper models mostly differ in speed and number of drive-slots for this use case. Most likely you’ll be fine with something like the ds218j or similar models – I even had a ds115j a couple of years back that was perfectly sufficient for TimeMachine but I would not recommend buying such an old model (the last 2 numbers indicate the season 115j -> 2015, 218j -> 2018).
If you like gadgets and play around a lot with computer stuff, the ds218+ (this is a different model than the 218j !!) should be on your watchlist as it offers support for stuff like docker (and thereby many applications like ResilioSync, various Git servers, teamspeak etc.)
There should be more electronic products that let me turn of the led’s, especially some phones, they are really annoying at night, when loading.
Hey Jeff, assuming something catastrophic happened to one’s desktop, how would you do a complete restore from the Synology Time Machine over a network connection? Also, are you recommending the Synology TM setup for both a system and also external hard drive of data backup?
Terence Patrick you would restore your time machine backup over Ethernet. I don’t understand the second question, sorry.
I use a Mac Mini with Time Machine sharing in High Seirra. It works pretty good! A video on that could be cool.
We use this, but sometimes the synology disappears from time machine, has anyone ever seen this?
David Allen I have a feeling that’s the drives you have installed start sleeping after a certain amount of time!
Actually we figured it out, we created a new public share and the Mac’s picked it right up, still no clue why or how it dropped the first one.

Nice video Jeff but wouldn’t it be easier to use a NAS with RAID 1 (Mirroring) for primary Time Machine? The writing performance on RAID 5 or RAID 6 is not the best. So to do a complete Time Machine backup of one or two Mac’s (maybe simultaneously) will take a long time. Thanks for your review!
Besides time machine, is there another backup option (software) for the Mac? I just fully moved to Apple products. On my PC, I was able to backup and view the backups via the cloud or via another computer or device (Apple or not). Thanks, was reviewing external drives. Very timely and well done
