When do you think the iPad Pro from 2018 will lose support for iPadOS? Although my iPad is running great. I am starting to think about upgrading when the time comes. I like to use mine especially when I am traveling on vacation. I also use it as a second TV to watch sports. A big sports fan like myself needs multiple devices to watch multiple games at one time. When I’m traveling and there’s nothing to listen to sports wise, I don’t like to watch sports movies. That’s what I use my iPad for.
An iPhone has enough power for normals if Apple only made it so you could dock it with a large display at home. The iPad Pro as you state in this clip would be great if you wanted to use it for content creation with larger displays.
Can now use Davinci Resolve, and Luma Fusion with a iPad Pro. Be nice if Apple Final Cut Pro worked on the iPad Pro.
I would love to use my iPad Air 5th Gen with secondary monitor support as a home computer. I bought it with that intention. Unfortunately, I have had many issues with it, and am unable to use it as I would like.
Using Zoom, Discord, and possibly others – when I use the secondary display, my video image turns to portrait and I am then sideways.
Using major streaming apps – Pluto, Tubi, STIRR, Paramount, Disney+, Peacock – Even though I open on my iPad, and would like to watch on my iPad – the video opens on my display instead. This means I am unable to multitask as I wish. Even odder – Peacock opens on my secondary display as “AirPlay”, even though I am connected using my USB C Hub.
Using YouTube – it displays on the external display as if it’s a mobile device and not the iPad. Instead of 3 videos across, it’s two – unless I narrow the window. Comments and next videos, more, etc… All appear under the video, not on the side.
I am extremely frustrated with this, unfortunately. I don’t know if it’s Apple, the developers, both… maybe my hub? Very frustrating!!!
I’m a teacher and feel this so hard. I actually gave my M1 iPad Pro Wife just a week ago because I found myself not using it. The above limitations plus many others is still making it a frustrating experience with hardware that I absolutely love.
@All Things Band That’s sad that you gave it to her. I still find it great, and use it – but not quite the way I’d like to yet.
I have the same experience – external monitor reviews always seem to review iPad Pro not the Air! I get many crashes and zoom camera is also an issue we need external camera support or the camera needs to allow manual orientation selection.
As an iPad Pro big fan & power-user (M1 12.9” here), I disagree bc the lack of essential softwares (at least for me) like Blender C4D Apple Motion Fusion360 and Sketch. Also the multitasking is truly not as powerful as a MacBook (I’ve used my friend’s M2 MacBook Air and have blown away by how good multitasking on it).

I agree as well. I too have the 12.9 M1 which I love and use every day in my workflow, but the software is so limited. I can’t really run any programming language another than Python and there are no engineering or mathematics programs available. If only we were allowed to run a VM within the iPad. Having an option to run linux some of the time would make this a true laptop replacement for me. For now it is just a companion to my 14” MacBook Pro.
This really is based on user experience. The iPad Pro can easily replace my MacBook Pro, even though i have and use both daily. But if you are a cloud user, and can use the integrated apps within the cloud, its a totally different animal with the iPad. Stage manager, though in the early development, needs to advance a bit more.
I love the concept and find myself trying to use ipad as desktop over my new macbook pro. The issue I have is window management. For example, I have a browser (brave) open, signal, imessage and usually youtube in the bottom right all at the same time. I could always use Jump to do some heavy lifting on a VM I have. It is just a windows management issue that holds me back and I am disappointed as I would love to make the jump. Oh, I am also skipping the fact that I use a bunch of chrome extensions in Brave. That is a different animal. I “think” I could get by with Safari and it’s extensions but window management is my major gripe. Am I missing something or doing something wrong…
I gave this a shot last year and I really wanted to figure out how to make it work but in the end couldn’t replace Lightroom Classic and DxO PureRaw, and since then I’ve started using a Photoshop plugin that I’m 99% certain Photoshop on iPad wouldn’t support. It’s so close, just not quite there.
Now my mother in law uses a regular gen 9 iPad as her computer and it’s perfect for her, but that’s a whole different use case for her. Safari, email, Facebook.
Hello, thanks for sharing this with us, I just bought the 2nd Generation Apple Pencil and the Track Pad this evening along with four air tags.
I have the older version iPad Pro 2018 ,11”model and thinking of upgrading to the newer 12.9” M2 iPad Pro, I would purchase it with at least one tier byte of storage so I could have the 16 gig of Ram and would get it with the Wi-Fi plus cellular and also get the Magic Keyboard for this model.
iPad Pro has definitely moved to this next level and is great on an external monitor however I have found that the Microsoft suite is not as easy and simple to use when compared to the pc version especially Excel…
I love the iPad, but using Excel on it is a massive PITA.
One advantage you did NOT mention is the versatility of your setup IF you are a digital artist/illustrator. You do NOT incur the cost of a Cintiq or Huion; it’s built into the iPad! Speaking of: When using your mouse, can you immediately pick up the ApplePencil and start working in Procreate? Or vice versa? Good video. Thanks!
The audio output issue is disappointing. I thought I was going crazy when connecting my M2 iPad Pro to my monitor for the first time. Hopefully this is a fix they bring with new iPadOS software in the summer.
Is the only negative in my external monitor set up. I’m hoping this gets resolved in iPadOS 17.
The IPP is definitely a worthy laptop replacement for a lot of people but it isn’t something that is capable for all people. There are some functions that just don’t work very well in the IOS environment (Excel being one that doesn’t work well). My advice is to give it a try and see if it works for you.
I enjoy your videos, and everyone’s use case is different. I use the iPad Pro 12.9″ and M1 Max MacBook Pro 16 and find I am far more productive on the MacBook due to superior multi-tasking and non-striped down productivity apps (Office). But Mac has its weak points too, like no Netflix application for offline content and Excel not on par with the Windows version, so there are trade-offs to every device.
