Review: Blackmagic eGPU for MacBook Pro – beautiful and quiet!

The Blackmagic eGPU is an external graphics enclosure that can boost the graphics capabilities of the MacBook Pro. The unit has several benefits, most notably, its extremely quiet operation. But should you consider this eGPU, which features a non-upgradable Radeon Pro 580, over other eGPU options? Watch our hands-on unboxing, review, and benchmarks for the details. ► Read:

    • It’s still a terrible buy. It’s not the RX 580, it’s about 13% slower according to userbenchmark. for 700$ you can get a different enclosure and a 1070/vega 56/1070 ti on sale, all of which will be between 63% and 91% faster than this overpriced, non-upgradable thing. You’re literally sacrificing up to half the possible performance of an eGPU because apple.

    • @John-Paul Hunt Your thoughts and ideas you try to illustrate in your comments are all over the place, talking about multiple stuff at once, unrelated with what you or I said before. So to conclude this “majestic word duel” eGPU is a solution for each and every laptop/PC/Mac out there with thunderbolt 3. Now depending on your needs and budget you can buy basically any eGPU solution and GPU you want/need be it powerful, silent and so on. And like I said I think Razer Core X is the cheapest solution and it looks best out of the bunch and it can fit most of the GPUS out there including silent ones.

  1. I’m a senior software engineer, I don’t care how much does it costs, I just want convenience, and operating system that does not use registry.

  2. Not worth it, you can save money on a eGPU such as the Mantiz MZ-02 or Razer Core X and RX580 8GB whilst also having the option to upgrade at any time or choose Nvidia, here you’re locked into the same GPU and can’t see much re-sale value compared to selling a regular GPU.

Only positive thing i can see coming from this is making people more aware of eGPU’s.

    • Also, the quiet. If that’s something you’re serious about. There is no eGPU quieter than Blackmagic’s.

    • I would much rather have fan noise than paying an extra premium for lower performance, it is okay to make sacrifices, except the sacrifice for silence comes at an extreme cost.

    • Oh yeah, quiet like imacs, imac pro and all macbook. They are so quiet that cpu get throttled because of temperature and you get even worse performance. I will pass this quit trend.

  3. Interesting. I called Apple support and they said out of the box Final Cut Pro X and the Photos app do take advantage of this eGPU. I will receive mine tomorrow and test this out.

  4. Hey Jeff, did you also run a test with Adobe software? Does the egpu support Premiere Pro for video editing? Thanks already in advance 🙂

  5. I ain’t spending $700 of my hard earned money on an eGPU that has an outdated GPU inside of it from the very beginning.

  6. If you edit or do colorgrading in Davinci Resolve and don’t have a laptop yet, buy a Windows laptop with an even faster INTEGRATED GPU like the NVIDIA 1070 or even 1080 and save lots of money and actually have something to carry around instead of a Macbook Pro and an overpriced, Mini-Tower PC sized outdated eGPU.

    This is just ridiculous.

    • An integrated NVIDIA 1080 mobile reaches about 170.000 points Geekbench 4 Compute benchmark – Integrated in a laptop.
And CUDA is actually even faster – especially in Davinci Resolve.

    • Why would any pro use a 1080 or 1070 if it does not support a 10 bit display. Quadro, yes is far superior, but the AMD has far better colour drivers

    • Dennis Schmitz furthermore if people have MacBooks they can just get a cheaper Egpu such as the Razer Core X and get an amd Radeon rx 580 8gb for $200 cheaper and have a better experience altogether.

  7. Thank you for posting an actual performance review. So tired of YouTubers throwing up unboxing videos – just like everyone else because they are in a hurry to get some hits. Thanks for posting this!

  8. I really enjoyed this video. You bring up good points and I enjoyed what you were saying.
Thank you and keep up the good works.

  9. The problem is not upgradeability, the problem is the pro rx580. Drop an vega 56 or 64, bump price to 799, it will sell like a hot cake. Easier to implement too, latest Mac pro got one, so no need too much code to optimize with both platform.
