   When price will drop (hopefully) gonna upgrade mine hackintosh from rx480 to Vega 64 :).

   • I’m waiting for that too… unfortunately as long as those pesky miners keep buying all Vegas available price is not going to drop 🙁
     I’m starting to consider dual RX 580 for my Hackintosh as they are easier to buy and FCP performance​ doesn’t​ seem that different​.

4. nice… how about FCPX 10.4 performance? there was a bug that the new FCPX only used the egpu for Playback but not for rendering and export

5. do you need a external monitor to use a egpu? bc all i have a iMac 27 5k, to get all the power of egpu. all i want to use for is fcpx.

   • chung ostrander eGPU in loopback mode, where it displays to the laptop screen, takes up bandwidth and results in a performance hit. IIRC it should work in that configuration if you are willing to compromise and want a portable thin and light gaming setup.

   • chung ostrander Unfortunately, after 9,2 you cant upgrade the RAM. Without a solid eGPU support right now, no eGPU with enough I/O that can take the place of a dock for under $350, a meh keyboard, and high GPU prices, I’m passing on 2017, especially since theres no upgrade path as of yet.

7. I think the “eject” error you saw is actually a drive named “eGPU”. You could see it on the desktop of the external monitor.

   • that’s definitely a placeholder especially considering that it shows something in the menubar. before the final release, I’m sure the icon and flavour text will be updated to reflect.

    • 16MB for some kind of protection and security reasons. Applied to cases like ram too.

13. Razer, a company that is +500,000 smaller, has egpu working with their laptops almost flawlessly, yet Apple is still in Beta on egpu. This is why I have given up on Apple and won’t be buying a laptop from them.
    Plus, Razers laptops, are very close to Apple laptops in quality if not better for similar price and you can run latest OSX on Razer laptop.

    • Let’s hope that’s the general situation. I would still not trust them with my money any time soon.

    • Lmao yeah ok good luck with that Razer laptop in 5 years, where (1) the Hackintosh dev support will dry up and (2) the Macbook will still be kicking strong

    • VM as a daily driver (LOL)– The 40% performance drain/overhead due to the host operating system (even if it’s a Linux distro leaner than Windows 10) totally negates macOS’s efficiency (software optimizations for the hardware) you’d get with just buying the MacBook #nativeForLyfe

14. What is the point when a 5K iMac display is better than anything you can buy outside of Apple?

    • Hi-Fi Insider Not really. The new LG 4K and 5K displays coming in February are brighter, have better contrast, are thinner, have more size options, thinner bezels, look better, have more elegant stands, and are more versatile than the monolithic display of the iMac. You need to keep up to date 🙂

    • Merlins Robe the first LG-contracted cinema displays had all kinds of issues. I certainly am for more TB3 screens, and certainly those look great on paper—but I’d suggest caution until reviews are in, due to quality control issues in LG’s past panels

15. Apple needs to start supporting NVIDIA graphics cards in new macOS updates. You may think otherwise, but I am getting frustrated with a GTX 1050ti that I can’t use without terminal commands.
