It’s official when Apple releases it. Until then they can make their mind up how to not do it. I really hope it comes but until then I will believe it when I see it
In europe the law is law. They will not ae to sell their product in europe of they dont pot usb-c . With european countrys you cant joke.
They’ll just supply a dongle with it or make you buy one
Other than the fact that Apple made a ton of money using lighting port. Why on earth didn’t apple make USB c a standard for iPhones?
@Febin Magar They can’t.
@cookie_monster agreed people just throw words and stuff bc words and stuff
I hate to say this but i feel even 15 series will come with lightening port, and 16 might come with type c only if they aren’t ready with their portless wireless charging strategy by then!
The iPad has USB-C.
What happens when something better than usb-c is ready in the future? Do companies have to go seek approval before dropping usb-c? Or is this regulation set for a certain amount of years before expiring or something? Getting usb-c on iPhones would be great, but putting hardware constraints on consumer tech products seems strange unless they have a good plan to address this down the road.
the speed of the currently fastest usb-c is literally 20 times faster than lightning, which has been the apple standard for 10 years, and people happily use it even today. considering new usb-c versions keep popping up with even faster speeds but the same form factor, we’re set for another 10 years at least, when they can just update the standard.
the “this stifles innovation” argument apple is making obviously makes zero sense, usb-c is far superior to lightning in every single aspect, except that apple isn’t making royalties on it.
lightning comfortably lived for 10 years without any kind of update to it ever, so usb-c probably also still has a comfortable decade ahead of it, especially because its specs can be further upgraded without changing the form factor.
@Bence We are not talking about USB-C. (BTW Apple calls its version Thunderbolt because it has some additional features.) The crucial point is, that whoever comes up with a better solution than the EU can think of, will not be able to sell the product in Europe without incorporating a port that was intended to be replaced.
after C its thunderbolt. which is still C.
EU only mandates that all companies agree to a single port. USB-C has a long way to go before it ever gets obsoleted, cuz it’s a reversible 24 pin connector, but when it is time, EU will mandate the newer open standard that will succeed USB-C.
@Kim Mathis no you are uninformed, Thunderbolt is not an Apple port..that is owned and listened by Intel
I think it’s a good idea on paper, but there are more things besides iPhone’s to consider here. For example: the various dongle’s that are available and power banks which have two USB a ports for charging. Presumably, there won’t be a cable with USB-C connecter (for the iPhone) With USB-A connecter (for the power bank) that widely available, or am I wrong on that?e
All powerbank companies are moving to usbc, everything is gonna be usbc in a few years
You might be making too many assumptions here. It’s entirely possible Apple ditches the lightning port in favor of wireless with no port. I wouldn’t say for sure that USB-C is officially coming to iPhones just yet.
I believe you are missing a technicality here… to sell a device in the EU, manufacturers will be legally OBLIGED to provide a USB-C port for charging. Whilst Apple may have planned to evolve from Lightning to port-less, the EU has placed a legal requirement to make USB-C ports available on devices sold from a certain date.
Until WiFi 6e or later becomes ubiquitous, I would expect USB-C to be around for quite a while. Also, please perform some real-world tests to quantify the advantage of USB-C and compare to Lightning in terms of throughout. An iPad with USB-C can be used as part of the testing.
Wifi 7 will come around 2023 or 2024 with 40gigabits. So yeah
I don’t think so. I think Apple is moving to no ports at all on the iPhone and going completely wireless. I don’t think they’ll make a usb-c version.
I have feeling they drop the port entirely
I am very curious about how many non-Apple phones this is going to actually impact.
All None apple phones have USB c, even the crappy one
@BÚN BÒ HUẾ That’s pretty much what I expect. Think over the past 3 years or so I’ve only seen 1 or 2 phones with micro USB
I’d say they stop including the cable in the box entirely too. They stopped including the brick to save on e-waste. This law is to do the same, and so why wouldn’t Apple save more costs and remove the cable from the box to sell on the side when needed.
I actually like Lightning, as it’s physically stronger and more resilient than USB-C.
The additional speed and compatibility will be nice though.
When you mentioned laptop manufacturers like Lenovo that have proprietary charging bricks and ports, those companies will probably just remove the charging port and give the USBC port charging capabilities, so you essentially lose more than you gain there.
eSIM in the U.S. only is not a precedent for this new law. Apple wants all iPhones globally to be eSIM only but it’s simply not feasible to make that kind of switch overnight. So they’ll start with the U.S. where they have the most leverage and slowly expand around the world as they prove the point at home
I honestly think USB C will be a much better and stable method. Always seems to be issues with the chargers now. Atleast with USB C once it clicks in it’s not going to come out
The lightning port is more durable than USB-C. It can take more abuse and keep working. Has the downside to something being more adorable, and the reason just one standard USB-C cable some duct transfer data some r very slow some are very fast and there’s no telephone marks on any of them those are the only reasons I would like to make a full video going in depth which already exists some chargers, aren’t compatible with your phone because they’re too powerful and they can’t talk to your phone. Meaning they send too much power to your phone and it’s not good for it and the thing that makes it so it doesn’t happen is in the cord and if the cord doesn’t have it where you can see what can happen.
Looking forward to a usb c iPhone next year so I can throw out all my lightning cables to avoid ewaste the usb c change is apparently going to reduce.
